WHY LIVE IN THE LCs?

Living in a Learning Community will provide you with the opportunities to be in a close knit community of learners focusing your major or passions into your life within the residence hall. Your experience in the Learning Communities is sure to be a unique experience of your undergraduate career. Learning Communities bring University learning into the everyday lives of students. The Learning Communities in Hessler Hall unite freshmen students with upper class students while these resident live with others who have similar interests and passions as one another. These communities offer special programming in the residence hall and opportunities to interact with Millikin faculty through special programming like Cake and Current Events, Last Chance Lecture Series, Faculty and Staff Teas, Faculty and Staff Sponsorship programs, and Cultural Chats and Cookies. Students in Learning Communities are able to further develop a sense of being connected with the campus community, and long-term success at Millikin University. Studies show that students who enroll in collaborative learning environments such as Learning Communities are more likely than their peers to graduate, make friends more easily, and perform better in all their classes.

Learning Communities are open to all full-time, degree-seeking students (additional criteria apply for each learning community) on an application basis. Applications are available early spring of each year. Applications are granted on a first-come, first served basis (space is limited). Some of Millikin's Learning Communities may be restricted to students who are enrolled in specific academic majors. Students will be removed from the Learning Community and placed in an alternate housing assignment if they do not maintain the minimum requirements for residency.
