Millikin University provides its computer system and access to email for academic purposes. Every student is expected to use good judgement when using the email system.
Two types of messages that are prohibited: Chain emails and Mass emails
Chain email is a message sent to a number of people asking each recipient to send copies with the same request to a specified number of others. Mass email is a message sent to a large number of recipients, for example, all students. Sending either type of message wastes computer resources and delays delivery of essential email. Circulating chain email in particular can result in an enormous volume of messages on the network. The number of messages increases geometrically. This can seriously degrade network performance and consume substantial amounts of valuable disk space. Students should delete all chain and mass emails immediately upon receipt and refrain from forwarding them to other students.
The Millikin email system should not be used
to send messages containing material that is
fraudulent, harassing, sexually explicit,
profane (including slang or abbreviated profanity,)
obscene, intimidating, defamatory, or otherwise
unlawful or inappropriate.
The Big Blue Listserv is provided as
an online space where Millikin University students,
staff, administrators, and alumni may post messages
to share with the entire campus community. It
is an option; it is not mandatory to participate.
The two general listservs, Campuswide Discussions
and Campus Announcements, are for all users
and off-campus users will be able to join and
participate. When you send a message to one
of the general listservs, the subject line should
reflect the contents of the email, for example,
For Sale, Lost & Found, Event, Lunch Menu, etc.
for Campus Announcements. The Announcements
listserv should not be used for discussions
or conversations (including Happy Birthday messages,
etc.,) and sending attachments to the Listserv
is also prohibited; improper usage will result
in the consequences listed below. The Discussion
Listserv is not monitored and is the vehicle
for conversations and online discussion.
The content of the listservs is not a reflection of the opinions of the university as a whole. Special groups may set up a limited listserv but are responsible for maintaining the list's participants and content.
Students found in violation of this policy will be subject to discipline as follows, there will be no warnings.
First offense, loss of email privileges for two weeks
Second offense, loss of email privileges for the remainder of the semester
Third offense, loss of email privileges for the remainder of the academic year
ADDENDUM
Federal law requires the University to make timely interim reports on any crime considered to be a threat to the campus community. The purpose is to aid in the prevention of similar occurrences. The most effective way to communicate such reports to the entire campus is through e-mail.
To comply with The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy & Campus Crime Statistics Act in the most effective manner possible, the Provost has authorized an exception to the "Student Electronic Communication Policy". The University's Director of Safety & Security will have the authority to send an interim report, pursuant to the Clery act, to the entire e-mail address book. This exception is exclusive to the Director and Safety & Security and shall not be afforded any other member of the campus community.
