The Legacy of the Lamp

The School of Nursing initiated the Legacy of the Lamp ceremony in the spring of 2000 to honor the academic success of students who have completed NU 202 (Introductory Practicum in Nursing) and to recognize their progression into upper-division nursing coursework. The Legacy of the Lamp is a tribute to Florence Nightingale (May 12, 1820 - August 13, 1910), pioneer of nursing and a reformer of hospital sanitation methods. Ms Nightingale became  known as "The Lady With The Lamp" from her work nursing wounded soldiers by candlelight at Scutari Hospital in Turkey during the Crimean War.
