Academic Programs
Millikin Honors Program
Incoming freshmen with a minimum ACT of 27/SAT of
1200, who graduated in the top 10% of their high
school class may apply to become members of the
Millikin Honors Program. The application process
also involves a written essay and interview session
with faculty and current Honors students. They can
be selected for one of two Honors Programs (Presidential
Scholars or Freshman Honors Scholars/James Millikin
Scholars).
Presidential Scholars
Generally, five students are selected annually
as Presidential Scholars and receive full-tuition
scholarships. Presidential scholarships are renewable
during a four-year program while the student maintains
a 3.5 grade point average. To be eligible, a student
must rank in the top 10 percent of the high school
class, score a minimum of 27 on the ACT or 1150
on the SAT tests, and demonstrate leadership in
school and community activities. Students also
participate in the James Millikin Scholars program.
Freshman Honors Scholars/James
Millikin Scholars
Coursework during the first year of the Honors
Program will introduce students to research, critical
thinking and writing. At the end of their first
year, Freshmen Honors Scholars will have the option
to remain in the Honors Program and become James
Millikin Scholars, so long as they continue to
meet the academic requirements. All Honors students
complete an independent Honors project during
their junior and senior years.
Classification
The goal over four years is to complete a minimum
of 124 credit hours with a cumulative GPA of 2.0
or better in order to graduate. (Curricula in
some areas require more credit hours and higher
standards.) Students are classified in class years
by the number of academic credits they have successfully
completed.
To rank as a sophomore, a student must have completed
24 credits; as a junior, 54 credits; and as a
senior, 88 credits (these levels are required
to retain eligibility for financial aid).
Grading
Grades are issued and recorded in the following manner:
A+ = Outstanding 4.0
A- = 3.7
B+ = 3.3
B = Above average 3.0
B- = 2.7
C+ = 2.3
C = Satisfactory 2.0
C- = 1.7
D+ = 1.3
D = Passing 1.0
D- = 0.7
F = Failure 0.0
I = Incomplete because of illness or some reason beyond the student’s
control. The incomplete must be cleared by the eighth week of the
succeeding term.
P = Pass (no quality points)
W = Withdrawal passing (not included in computing grade averages)
WF = Withdrawal failing (computed as F in grade average)
W = Withdrawal (no penalty) awarded only during the first six weeks
of semester
First-year students will receive midterm grades, which will be issued
before the fall break. Parents will not be sent grades but are encouraged
to discuss academic progress with their students. Semester grades
are issued approximately two weeks following the end of each semester.
All grades are available through MU
online.
