Records Policy / Release of Information
FERPA
In 1974, Congress enacted into law the Family
Educational Records and Privacy Act (FERPA). This
act sets out requirements of educational institutions
designed to protect the privacy of students and
their records. Specifically, the act governs access
to education records maintained by educational
institutions and the release of information contained
in those records. The act gives students enrolled
in postsecondary institutions “ownership”
and control of their educational records. Please
understand that if the University has not been
given permission by the student to release information
to someone, we generally cannot release the information
under the provisions of FERPA.
Parents are encouraged to have conversations with
their student about sharing information. The Office
of Student Life and Academic Development (SLAD)
can facilitate the release of information from
students’ educational records utilizing
a signed release form. Please contact SLAD at
(217) 424-6340 if you have questions about FERPA
provisions.
