Frequently Asked Questions

HOUSING AND DINING

When do I move in?
Move-in day for first-year students is Wednesday, August 20 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Student athletes and those participating in summer bridge programs, such as the Edge Program, Long-Vanderburg Scholars, and athletes, will move in earlier per their activity schedule.

In addition to moving in, students will meet their Resident Assistants, First-Year Experience Mentors, and peers while parents have a chance to mingle with other families and administrative staff at the Family Oasis. More information about these events will come this summer.

When do I found out who my roommate is?
You can get your housing and roommate information today. Check out the Residence Life booth to get all your housing and roommate info.

What kinds of things should I bring-and not bring-on move-in day?
It's generally a good idea to pack lightly-most college freshmen bring too much for their first semester. Remember that you'll be sharing a room with another person, so there is limited space. There are plenty of stores in Decatur where you can find items you've forgotten or decide you need later.

Some important items to bring that are often forgotten:
  • First Aid kit, complete with thermometer and OTC medications
  • Address book and important phone numbers
  • A light jacket for the fall months
  • A business attire outfit for class presentations and formal meetings
  • Medical Insurance Card and other important identification documents
Some things to leave at home:
  • Microwaves
  • Refrigerators over 3 cubic feet
  • Any appliances with an open heat source (i.e. toaster ovens)
  • Large furniture pieces
  • Fitness equipment (i.e. free weights, punching bags, or bike rollers)
  • Knives or other weapon-like devices, including paint ball and air soft guns
  • Pets (other than fish, tanks not to exceed 10 gallons)
  • Candles or incense burning devices
Talk to your roommate and decide who's bringing what so you both don't bring the same items.

What if I didn't get my first choice for my room or building?
Don't worry-many students do not get their first, second, or even third choice for housing. Part of the college experience will be learning to get along with those different from you and making your room your home away from home. Room changes are not usually made over the summer. You will be asked to stay in your assigned room for the first 10 days of classes. Most students end up really enjoying their room and roommate assignments, so don't be worried or nervous. Just jump in and give the experience a chance.

LIFE ON CAMPUS

What is First Week?
First Week is Millikin's unique program to assist first-year students with becoming acclimated to the University campus and community. During the week-long program beginning Aug. 20, students begin University Seminar courses, meet and bond with other new students, learn about on-campus involvement, participate in engaging activities with their peers and First-Year Experience Mentors, and fully become members of the University community. Interested students may also audition for School of Music ensembles and choirs during scheduled times. Questions about First Week should be directed to the Office of Student Programs at osp@millikin.edu or 217.424.6335.

Who can ask when I have questions about my freshman year?
Josh Hayes is Millikin's Director of the First-Year Experience and is here to help you with any questions, concerns, or problems during your first two semesters at Millikin. Whether it's an academic issue or an extracurricular issue, contact him at jhayes@millikin.edu or 217.362.6424.

How can I get involved on campus?
It's easy to find something to do at Millikin, with over 90 student organizations to choose from. Until then, check out the Office of Student Program webpage at www.millikin.edu/student_life or contact OSP at osp@millikin.edu or 217.424.6335.

How does my ID card work?
Your ID card serves many purposes, so be sure to carry it at all times. It will give you access to your residence hall, check out books at the library, and serve as your debit card for your meal plan. It is crucial that you validate your ID card on Move-In Day-this lets Millikin know you're a registered student, activates your card so you can eat on campus, and grants you access to buildings and classrooms throughout campus.

ACADEMICS

Will I get my Fall 2008 schedule of classes today?
Yes. After meeting with your advisor, you will be able to go online and register for your fall courses. Computer training and actual registration for classes will begin at 1p.m. Help will be available if you have questions.

How will I know what to take?
You can go online at www.millikin.edu/academics and look up your major by school/department. Each department either has an 8-semester layout of the major or an advising sheet indicating the courses needed to complete the degree on each site. Your advisor will help you pick the courses you need to take your first semester.

Where do I get help with my academics?
First, talk to your professor or your academic advisor if you have questions-they'll post their available office hours each semester. Josh Hayes, Director of the First-Year Experience, will always point you in the right direction, and the Academic Development Office can also help you find a peer tutor or study tables-all without charge-if you need the extra help.

Will my academic advisor stay the same during my first year?
Unless you change your major or declare a major if you are undecided, your academic advisor will remain the same all year. Your advisor is here to help you with any questions you have about courses, graduation requirements, minors, and more, so be sure to utilize him or her.
